Introducing Sonia Madigan: Relait's new Head of Corporate Development

Introduce yourself

I am a mum of two: a son who is nearly 17 and loves maths and science, and a daughter who is 14 and plays as a striker with the Football West Academy.

Their upbringing is very different from mine. I grew up on a wheat and sheep farm north of the Clare Valley in South Australia. I have also lived in Adelaide and spent five years in New Zealand.

Outside of work, I enjoy boating and nights out with friends, usually with good wine, music and dancing. I also love watercolour painting, although I rarely find the time for it.

What’s your professional background?

Decades in journalism, including reporting and newsreading roles across Channel 9, A Current Affair and TVNZ. I’ve worked as a government minister’s media adviser, in corporate communications, and I also led the media & production team at HotCopper. During my five years at HotCopper, I saw the need for public company IR efforts to become more data-led, and so, since mid-last year, I’ve been focussed on AI-empowered data intelligence for ASX-listed companies.

What’s your new role at Relait?

My role is to introduce companies and their IR partners to the advanced & affordable tech which allows them to better understand their register – who’s behind nominee accounts, who’s accumulating a significant position, who’s departing – and communicate with those investors directly & more easily.

Why Relait?

I am impressed by the tech capabilities; by the nimbleness of the amazing Relait team to meet client needs; and by their dedication to providing proper training and ongoing support to clients. There’s certainly lots of demand for user-friendly websites and integrated investor centres (and I think that Relait’s really look great), as well the easily accessible information and tools that Relait has grouped all together into one place.

I can see Relait’s tech supports lean teams by delivering efficiencies in preparing comms, announcements, quarterlies and social media posts, but also by allowing a deeper understanding of what moves the market & who makes up the register. This allows any company’s communications and IR efforts to be much more targeted. You can know who to engage, what to engage them with, and where you can reach them.

The bottom line is that understanding who matters on the register is critical to shaping targeted worthwhile IR strategy, and efficiencies clear the way for more proactive efforts.

Why startups?

As a busy mum, I appreciate working flexibly, and what’s super-important to me is working with a great team of friends, who genuinely care about each other. I already feel welcome and at home at Relait.

What’s the most exciting thing about Relait?

The most exciting part of working with Relait is knowing how many companies can benefit. This is a large, under-addressed space, where leaders need clearer register visibility and more targeted investor comms and we can finally deliver a tool through Relait that actually does this well.
